I looked up which movies came out last summer and guess what. Go ahead guess. I saw one of them and it was fantastic. Here's the trailer for Toy Story 3.
Check back tomorrow for a surprise 31st day!
Titanic.
The damn ship sinks.
This is a hard category because I want to pick movies you'd be all "Kerry, that's lame, how could you pick THAT?!" So, I'll pick two. One would be Good Will Hunting, the other is Love Actually. The airport scene at the end of Love Actually is a wonderful ending to a wonderful movie and concludes most of the story lines. The ending of Good Will Hunting leaves you hopeful and I like that.
The ending for Love Actually has embedding disabled, so I'm sorry. Even though I'm pretty sure everyone has seen it by now, here is the ending of Good Will Hunting.
Do you know what doesn't exist? A movie about a married extremely hormonal creative 30something year-old red-haired big girl. Go ahead, check IMDB — doesn't exist.
Do you know what does exist? Lots of other movies.
The movies I'll talk about today are what would describe my adolescence. My youth would be a blend of Pretty in Pink and Sixteen Candles.
My teenage years were spent trying to be myself and to figure out who that self was while being a poor creative red-haired girl trying to be noticed by whomever the guy of the time was. As most people who grew up on the poor side of middle class will tell you, I didn't know we were poor. I didn't have a car. I wore what I considered to be great clothes, but I babysat to pay for them. I didn't wear jeans. Not once in high school did I wear jeans. I thought I was fat. I thought everyone thought I was fat. I was different and I liked being different. Things were difficult for me though. I put up with a lot of crap that I should have stood up against. Bad things happened. Good things happened. I dated bad boys. I had good friends. I was clinically depressed. I loved. I lost. I didn't understand what was going on with me. I didn't understand why things were happening the way they were.
I was young. Someone should make it into a movie.
There isn't one particular movie I quote the most, so I'll give you the 10 quotes I've used the most in, oh, the past 20 years.
Pretty in Pink:
"It's called a sense of humor – you should get one – they're nice."
"Listen, it's after 7:00. Don't waste good lip gloss." and "wishful make-upping." – Lord knows I've done both.
"Applause, applause, APPLAUSE." — must be said slowly and for attention.
"If I was in a Turkish prison, I'd have a great time with you." — I love this quote. Love it.
Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil:
"It's like my mom always said, 'Two tears in a bucket, motherfuck it.'" — probably my favorite quote of all time. Yes, I'm awful.
The Jerk:
"I was born a poor black child." — obviously.
"Well I'm gonna to go then! And I don't need any of this. I don't need this stuff, and I don't need you. I don't need anything. Except this."
"I'm picking out a Thermos for you. Not an ordinary Thermos for you." — I sing this to myself often. I don't know why.
"Lord loves a workin' man; don't trust whitey; see a doctor and get rid of it." — when we lived in Brunswick, GA, I whispered this every Sunday in church at the end of service when the plate was passed for tithing as our pastor said "give cheerfully, the Lord loves a cheerful giver." The hubs told me to stop every Sunday. I couldn't help it.
There are many characters I can say I used to relate to, but that's no longer the case for most of them because they were from my younger days and truth be told, Hollywood doesn't exactly make many movies that are relatable for 30something year-old superfantastic women. Most movies about 30something year-old women are dumb women finding themselves and I know who I am. And so, the older I get the more I relate to Ouiser Boudreaux from Steel Magnolias.
Have you been paying attention? I like a bunch of movies that most people would be embarrassed to say they like. I don't care. People, I give you Mannequin. No, I'm not embarrassed to say I like it. Hello, Andrew McCarthy. I saw this movie at the South Park Mall theater in Shreveport in 1987 and it's pretty awful. And the music is awful.
I've been a mood. It was an extremely rough week thanks to a sinus and double ear infection, the last week of school for the kids, and hormones (or lack thereof). I thought I'd do a random post.
Last week was the oldest's 3rd grade award ceremony. It was held in the gym. Do schools not build auditoriums anymore? I loved the auditoriums of elementary and high schools. There is something wrong about not having auditoriums in schools. Auditoriums make things grander. There is nothing grand about a metal folding chair in a warm gym. I don't remember the auditorium of my middle school, perhaps because I hated middle school.
The boy child's Kindergarten graduation was in that same gym. The fonts used on the slideshow were Papyrus and Comic Sans. I cringed.
The softball fields have been my hell away from home for the past month (and will be for another few weeks). I've been calling one of the girls on one of my girls' teams She-ra and I found out her name is Shira. I felt dumb. No offense to her parents, but She-ra would have been a more kick-ass name. I mean, she was the Princess of Power.
In other news, one of the channels on tv is bringing back Jem and the Holograms. Gonna have to watch that.
So, the kids are out of school for the summer and because they are kids, they want to craft on this Monday. I want to take a nap. Confession: I hate crafting with kids. I know I'm not supposed to say things like that, but I have to be honest with you people. The thing is, I have the patience of Job when it comes to some things, but not this. Not crafting. I'm all about the crafting, but not with the kids. What do they want to do today? Make rings and headbands.
You know what else I hate? I will be at the ballpark almost everyday this week. I have given nicknames (in my head) to most of the people I see there, so that makes it a little more enjoyable. Inappropriate Mom wore yet another ridiculous outfit last week — I can hardly wait to see what she has on tonight. Overenthusiastic Uncle wasn't there Friday. Shut Up Grandma has moved to the top of my Most Annoying List. I hope Walmart Shorts got a makeover over the weekend, but I doubt it.
I'm listening to New Order and making a playlist to walk to. Starting with "Bizarre Love Triangle" of course. I've always found synthpop to work well for any type of workout music. I wore out my Pet Shop Boys Disco tape in college — the time in my life when I was most committed to exercise for some reason.
On another note, I was nearly killed by a Nordic Track machine in 1995– no coordination whatsoever. I can barely use a treadmill and don't get me started on stair machines.
I love udon noodles.
Have you heard Pet Shop Boys cover of Coldplay's "Viva la Vida"? It's quite good. They mashed it with their "Domino Dancing" from Introspective. Good stuff.
I need more udon noodles.
