This is a pretty unknown Ben Folds song that so fucking good. Y’all know how much I adore Folds. He’s an amazing musician and writer. He can pretty much do anything.
The original version of “For Those of Y’all Who Wear Fanny Packs” is great, but this is a live version, where he sings about not being cool because his band came up in the middle of the grunge scene. Listen, you’ll love it.
I hate hate hate inspirational quotes. Hate loathe. People post them on Facebook and Instagram by the dozen every damn day and it makes me want to vomit.
To combat the ridiculous positivity, I post Unspirational quotes. Some are from the Instagram of the same name by Elan Gale. Some are from me.
You can imagine my delight finding out that he wrote a book, You’re Not That Great (but neither is anyone else),and Elan, I’m not even mad at you that you took maybe the best title ever and now I can’t use it.
I’ve always liked Beck. I’m not saying I’m a huge fan, but I’ve followed his work since “Loser.” Who doesn’t love that song?
A few years ago, Beck put together his Record Club, consisting of dozens of musicians; most notably (to me): Thurston Moore, Wilco, and St. Vincent. They’ve covered five or six complete albums by different artists in ONE day. Complete albums. One day.
My favorite albums the Record Club have covered are The Velvet Underground’s The Velvet Underground and Nico and Kick by INXS. Kick is one of my favorite albums ever. No one in his generation had the sound and charisma of Michael Hutchence. Sweet baby Jesus of Australia — he was amazing.
I wanted to do this post several years ago, but the videos weren’t embed-able, nor on You Tube. But (yay!) they are now. So, today, I give you Beck’s Record Club covering a good bit of Kick by INXS.
One of my best middle school friends sent this photo of a letter of all my favorites from 1988 and it made me laugh so much that I had to post it. Lori, thanks for making me laugh this week.
This is the letter. The handwriting is barely legible and shows evidence that I’ve never been able to write a cursive R, despite having one in each of my names. And it’s hard to believe my adult handwriting has gotten praise enough to address wedding invitations. And I have my own font. I know, 13 year-old me is shocked.
The letter
So, the thing that bugged me (besides listing Richard Marx and Michael Bolton because I absolutely loathe both) is that I couldn’t place the band Times 2. So I looked them up. They were an exact copy of the band Scritti Politti with a little OMD thrown in. If you don’t know Scritti Politti, it’s ok. They were SO 1987.
So, last night I had a music convo with my friend Lori, whom I share a love of music with (since 6th grade). I posted about my new find, Clem Snide, and she introduced me to her boy Ryan Montbleau. He’s got good stuff.
