iphone app love

With all this iPad talk of late, I thought I'd tell y'all that I love my iPhone.   I've decided to wait until the second generation of iPads come out before I get my iPhone a big brother.  I'm thinking that the second gen will have a camera and a few more things gadget geeks like me are hoping for.  Anyway, knowing I am a gadget geek, friends like to ask me what my favorite apps are, so I thought I'd tell you.

I love camera apps.  My first must is iZoom FX, which is great for giving your iPhone the zoom Steve Jobs doesn't think we need.  I used it a ton at the circus last summer and it worked swell.  Next is PS Mobile, which is Photoshop Mobile.  It lets you adjust hue, saturation, color, and contrast all on your iPhone – so if a pic isn't just right, you can fix it and upload it to Facebook without putting it on your computer first.  For my ultimate new favorite — I have to go with Hipstamatic.  I found out about this gem on Dooce's blog.  It gives you choices of old fashioned films and lenses – tell me that's not awesome.

Here's a sample of pics I've taken with the Kodot film and John S lens.

Some pale weirdo.

So, that's Hipstamatic.  There are lots of other lenses and film, but I've only showed you two.  Download it and have fun.

Speaking of fun, whenever someone says "I need a new fun app," I tell them to get Esteem Aid.  It's completely silly.  And fun.  Say you're down, open Esteem Aid and shake.  You get messages like this:

Obviously.

IMG_1526

Thanks, Syralja – I admire you, too.

IMG_1530
Yes, I am Jack Nicholson.

IMG_1535
Again, obviously.  But I can't play guitar and he looks better in Hawaiian shirts.

Esteem Aid takes your contacts names and inserts them in the messages, so you may get "You are ten times sexier than Kerry" or "Kerry is thinking about you."  Which I am – I am constantly thinking about you.  It's a free app, get it and bust it out when you're bored, it will make you laugh.  It makes me laugh when it says "Cindy thinks you are hot," because that's just what I want from my son's bus driver.

I'll have a Tunes Tuesday next week and more posts this week.  Y'all be good.

photo study: the ENT’s office wall mural

The boy child has an ear and sinus infection (he's an overachiever), and because he has ear tubes, we headed to the ENT today.  I'll spare you the details of the exam room, but trust me – there were tools and equipment I haven't seen since I was a small child in Dr. Watkin's office on Line Avenue in Shreveport.  And I got to assist! Guess all that ER, Grey's Anatomy, and Private Practice came in handy!

What I look most forward to at this this particular doctor's office is the wall mural in the waiting room.  It is nothing short of a masterpiece in waiting room art.  And it spans the length of the room.  It is long.  I'm not good with measurement, so I couldn't tell you how long it is, but it's long.  One half of it is a Louisiana bayou scene, one half is a typical Louisiana home and family.

Here is almost half of the bayou scene.

IMG_1521
Don't worry, I took close-ups.

IMG_1514
And even closer-ups.

IMG_1520
What can I say, I'm a sucker for hound dogs.

IMG_1519
Don't look now, but it's my uncle Earl.

IMG_1518
Oh, it's my pets, Boudreaux and Bandit, playing on a log — those silly critters.

IMG_1525
Now for the other half of the mural.  It's the old homestead at Tallow Creek.  Been in the family for generations. I've restored it back to original white paint and had the gardner put in the historically accurate ferns.  The name of the brick is Old Jackson and the trailing roses are "Elizabeth Taylor."

IMG_1524
I thought it was nice of the artist to depict our family on the way home from church on Sunday in our smart car.

If you're not from Louisiana, and judging by the blog's stats — you're not — I can tell you this mural is a fair representation of the entire state.  We all either live in shacks or on plantations and fish for our dinner in the swamp, that is if we're not eating what we happened to kill that crawled up onto the porch.  It's not for everybody, but it's life here in Louisiana.  Now if you'll excuse me, I have to have Mammy tighten my corset so I can get into this here ball gown and go to the fancy debutante shindig across the lake.

tunes you need Tuesday: the bird and the bee

Every once in a while a band comes along and does something so genius that I feel is worth sharing with you people.  The Bird and The Bee have done that.

Last week The Bird and The Bee released Interpreting The Masters Volume 1 (A Tribute to Daryl Hall and John Oates).  Genius.  I can only hope they cover all of the bands I love from the '80s because this album is simply fantastic.  It's good times.

Here are are a few songs for your listening pleasure.  Enjoy.

07 She's Gone

Here they are doing "I Can't Go for That" on Ellen last week.  Love it.

This is from The BIrd and The Bee's Wikipedia page:

The Bird and the Bee is an indie/Synthpop/alternative musical duo from Los Angeles, consisting of musicians Inara George ("the bird") and Greg Kurstin ("the bee"). Kurstin, a producer and keyboardist who has worked with Lily Allen, Sophie Ellis-Bextor, Beck, The Flaming Lips, Kylie Minogue and Red Hot Chili Peppers, is also a member of the band Geggy Tah. George and Kurstin met while the two were working on her debut album and they decided to collaborate on a jazz-influenced electro pop project. Their debut EP, Again and Again and Again and Again, was released on October 2006 and their debut album was released on January 23, 2007 on Blue Note Records.

So, you're going to download the album on iTunes, right?  Good.

you’ve gone too far, hello kitty

Hello-kitty-jesus-tattoo.thumbnail I have two daughters, thus we have lots of Hello Kitty stuff around the house.  There are dolls, clothes, coloring books, hair paraphernalia, shoes, toothbrushes, headphones, backpacks – the list goes on and on.

A few years ago it started spilling into my world as well.  It started with a mouse pad.  It was pink and shaped like a bow, and well, pink is my signature color.  The girls thought the mouse pad was for them.  Silly children.  Then one day I slipped and asked one of the girls if they had seen "my" Hello Kitty hair clip.

And now it's no secret that Hello Kitty is my Jesus. *

It's just strange the way the cat has worked herself into my everyday existence. It seems there is nothing I do where I don't feel the presence of the feline — from the smallest item to the biggest of my day, I'm always surprised to see Hello Kitty in the oddest places.

Take my typical day, for instance – nothing out of the ordinary.  I may have a doctor appointment.

Like I said, nothing out of the ordinary, there.  Then I might go to the shooting range for a bit, good times.

Hello-kitty-ak47-400x299

Meeting friends for sushi is one of my favorite things to do, and we've been on a big sushi kick lately.

Hello-kitty-sushi
Then we might go for coffee.  Y'all know good coffee is one of my vices.  I love coffee.

Hello-kitty-coffee
After coffee, I'd head home to get a few things done before the kids come home from school.  Maybe cut down that tree I've been meaning to take care of.

Hello-kitty-chainsaw-400x268
Then of course, I'd have to take care of my bees.  What?  You didn't know I was also a beekeeper?

Hello-Kitty-hive-400x300

There's nothing I enjoy more after a long day of dealing with the kids and all the miscellaneous stuff I do than kicking back with my Hello Kitty bong.  Not really.  Yes, those are real bongs, but not mine.

Hello-kitty-bongs-400x533
But Hello Kitty has gone too far this time.  Now there is Hello Kitty wine.  Wine.  Real wine.

Catwine3
What is this telling kids?  Hello Kitty wants them to drink?  I cannot give this the Kerry stamp of approval.  The Kerry stamp of approval is a big pink K, by the way.  There are several types of Hello Kitty wine.  The wine's tagline is "our favorite girl has grown up."  Well, I guess so.  Hello Kitty is a drunk.

If I liked wine I'd probably drink it.

*that's a joke, people.

sunday rewind: Hall and Oates

Hall and Oates is a departure from the usual post punk/new wave I usually feature here on the Sunday Rewind, but there is a method to my madness – come back for the return of Tunes Tuesday and all will be revealed.  Truth be told, I love the Hall and Oates.  Love the blue eyed soul.

As usual, I saved the best for last.  Get a load of this f*ckery I found.  I mean, gem.

Okay, wtf was that?  Chippendales Oates, Hall refused to sing, strappy sandals, the devil, the weird jacket the chick helps Oates into with the sleeves, and I'm pretty sure Hall was stoned.  The '70s were bad, people.  Just say no to time machines.

I'm getting my hair cut and colored tomorrow and I feel like a change, so I though I'd do a Google image search for "short naturally curly hair pictures."  The results were interesting.

Take a look, maybe you can help me decide which style to go with, because at this point it's a toss-up and my appointment is at ten, so any help would be appreciated.  Let's go to the photos.

I don't know what the Google is trying to tell me.   Timberlake's hair isn't even a style.

I think I'm going to go with the Lenny Kravitz.
