Y'all knew I was going to pick Mommie Dearest, right? I've posted enough clips from the movie on the blog over the years, haven't I? I thought so. There are so many movies that fit this category, but the truth is that Mommie Dearest doesn't fit anywhere else. Sure, it's a drama, but it's camp. It's not supposed to be a comedy. It's just one of my favorites ever. I will watch it whenever notice it's on television, I watch clips of it on You Tube sometimes when I'm down (the "don't fuck with me, fellas! This ain't my first time at the rodeo!" scene would cheer up Job). So, yeah — Mommie Dearest. 

Christina Crawford wrote the book the movie was based on and two of her siblings deny that some of the things in the book/movie happened, but I don't care, I love it anyway.

The trilogy thing is hard because come on, Star Wars. Star Wars was the first movie I remember seeing (I was three, saw it in a drive-in theater with my parents in the station wagon with wood paneling) and I've seen the trilogy (and the second trilogy) dozens of times. BUT my favorite trilogy is the Jersey Trilogy — Clerks, Mallrats, and Chasing Amy. 

Clerks and Chasing Amy are pretty perfect as far as films go and Mallrats has hysterical moments, but this scene from Chasing Amy is genius. 

There are plenty of poignant and wonderful scenes in these movies, but I'll let you discover them for yourselves if you haven't seen the trilogy. Let me know which was your favorite. 

This was a tough one for me because it was hard to pick one. There are movies I love from teenagehood, but I thought this category should be more pre-teen, so I picked Real Genius. It's fantastic and stars vintage Val Kilmer when he was hot. Runners-up for this category were Spies Like Us and Adventures in Babysitting, by the way.

If you know me, you know I love documentaries. I watch more documentaries in a year than most people probably do in their lives (my estimate, but I'm not great at math). I've seen documentaries on everything from synchronized swimmers to biscuits to engineered corn to bio fuel to animation to scrabble enthusiasts to pretty much every conspiracy documentary ever made. I have many favorites, but my most favorite is Helvetica. Yes, it's a whole film on type. And I love it. 

The thing about Helvetica, which you will see in the trailer, is that it's everywhere. It's the font on the logos of Jeep, Target, American Airlines, GM, Microsoft, Toyota, BMW, Post-it, Panasonic, Scotch tape, etcetera etcetera etcetera. It's Swiss and neutral, it's 50 years old and still new and fresh. The film explores all of this and the making of type and more. I love this film.

In case you're wondering, that's Arial someone used to put "Now Available on iTunes" on the video. Interesting. 

Also, if you're into documentaries, The September Issue is amazing and so is Food, Inc. 

Chick flicks are supposed to be sappy and stuff right? I know this one is considered a chick flick, but it's realy not — it's just one of my favorite movies. When Harry Met Sally. Everyone has seen this, so no trailer — just a few favorite scenes.

I love the word "paprikash."

My favorite foreign film is Amelie. It's wonderful and you should see it. It's quite whimsical and enjoyable.

My favorite musical is The Wizard of Oz. I want to be Glinda. I don't think that surprises anyone does it?

Here is my favorite line of the movie (which works well in many situations actually) "you have no power be gone, before somebody drops a house on you too!"

My favorite thriller is the perfect thriller in that it has elements of comedy, romance, as well as suspense. Plus, it stars Cary Grant, who is one of my favorites. Charade is the thriller. It stars Audrey Hepburn as a woman who just lost her husband in mysterious circumstances and Grant as the man who helps her figure things out. This film has great snappy dialogue, fantastic characters, and Cary Grant. Did I mention Cary Grant?
