Because of the weirdness. And bowling. 

 

Let's talk about how this isn't even a discussion. 

Reality Bites. 

Awesome movie with an even better soundtrack. Why? Don't worry, I brought examples. The movie was famous for Lisa Loeb's "Stay," but we're going to look at some less known jams.

"Spin The Bottle" by the Juliana Hatfield Three. This is one of my favorites. Juliana Hatfield has an amazing voice and this song is fantastic.

 

"When You Come Back to Me" by World Party. Great song. I really liked the soung of World Party.

 

"Revival" by Me Phi Me. Because there aren't enough songs about old time church revivals down at the river. Take a dip an revive yourself! The song starts off very quiet, be patient, you will be rewarded. And I have added the lyrics because of course I did.

And a song that is one of my favorite songs ever. "Tempted" by Squeeze. It doesn't get better than that. Sadly, the original video is no longer available, but I wasn't gonna leave y'all hanging – here's the original song off the album because it's just not the same without Paul Carrack singing.

 

Not suprisingly, I have a few. 

I'm going with the Problem Child Series, The Mummy, Sliver, and The Lost World: Jurassic Park. 

Here's the thing: I loved Jurassic Park. I've read everything by Michael Chricton and was way excited for the film, but there was a problem – no one who made the movie read the novel. They just had an illiterate drum-playing monkey skim the book and the monkey retold the story to the screenwriter in sign language, but the screenwriter was blind, so he just made up some crap and Spielberg was like, "a'ight, wrastle up them dinosaurs!" and they made a movie. 

There are a few 90s movies that I love, so I'm picking three.

Notting Hill. I love this movie. I love the bad dates Hugh Grant gets set up on at the beginning of the movie, when the girl says she's a fruitarian. 

Keziah: No thanks, I'm a fruitarian. 
Max: I didn't realize that. 
William: And, ahm: what exactly is a fruitarian? 
Keziah: We believe that fruits and vegetables have feeling so we think cooking is cruel. We only eat things that have actually fallen off a tree or bush – that are, in fact, dead already. 
William: Right. Right. Interesting stuff. So, these carrots… 
Keziah: Have been murdered, yes. 
William: Murdered? Poor carrots. How beastly! 

THE CARROTS HAVE BEEN MURDERED.

Here is the part that makes me cry, every time.

 

You've Got Mail. Yes, it's a little corny. No, I don't care. I still love it. You've Got Mail is based on The Shop Around the Corner, a 1940 Jimmy Stewart film (also a wonderful movie). There are Pride and Prejudice influences all over the movie, which I also love. Plus, it's super 90s with the dial-up internet sound and the familiar "you've got mail" from AOL. It's sweet. It's a sweet movie. Sometimes that what you need.

 

The Big Lebowski. And sometimes you need a little not sweet. If you haven't seen The Big Lebowski, I don't know what's wrong with you or how you've ignored this masterpiece, but you need to see it. I can't help but love this movie, because dude, I was pretty much raised in a bowling alley and the White Russian is my favorite drink.

The whole movie is my favorite scene. I'm narrowing down it down to one I love. "Obviously, you're not a golfer."

 

Dude.

Shut up. 

How can it not be Ally McBeal? This was a very Kerry show. The weirdness and the musical performances – shut up again.

That show kind of made me want to be a lawyer (only when I was watching the show). 

 

Did I mention there was Robert Downey, Jr.? I think this started his comeback.

 

But mostly, Ally wins for this: the dancing. It's not the first Barry White clip, it's different – it's dancing in their uni-sex bathroom. You see, The Biscuit had low self-esteem. He overcame this by identifying with Barry White because of course he did.

 

This is difficult. On one hand, 90210 had Emily Valentine – Brandon's crazy stalker ex-girlfriend who poured gasoline all over a homecoming parade float and was stopped from setting it on fire by Brenda, then was committed to a mental institution. 

 

On the other hand, Melrose Place had crazy psycho doctor Kimberly, who blew up an apartment complex, faked her death, came back and got back together with the exhubs (after convincing him to dump the new girlfriend) and rips her wig off, showing the giant scar on her head from the faked accident. 

 

I'm going to go with 90210 for the win. Melrose's storylines were too over the top. Not that 90210 was super realistic, but it was awesome.

"Searching My Soul" from Ally McBeal. If you weren't an Ally McBeal fan, you probably don't know that Vonda Shepard's songs are a theme through the series. In every episode, the gang would end up at the bar where Vonda played piano. It was great. "Searching My Soul" was the theme song and really sums up Ally.
