Tunes Tuesday: Delta Spirit

Delta Spirit is fantastical.  That's all you really need to know.

But here's the intro of their Wiki:

Delta Spirit is a band from San Diego, California. They are often dubbed as a “hybrid of rock and northern soul” or as an "Americana/soul" group. The group incorporates unconventional instruments (such as trash cans lids and orchestral bass drums), the multi-instrumentalism of the members and the vocal delivery and religiously/spiritually-themed lyrics of singer Matt Vasquez. The group consists of Jon Jameson (bassist), Brandon Young (percussionist), Matthew Vasquez (vocalist/guitarist), and Kelly Winrich (multi-instrumentalist).

I found out about Delta Spirit from a music site that I stumbled on and instantly loved them.  Each song is better than the last.  I've downloaded their albums History From Below and Ode to Sunshine and I really can't say enough good things about them.   These guys are the real deal.  I think you'll like them.

"Bushwick Blues" is the first song I listened to, so I'm offering it up first.  I'm including several songs today because it was hard to pick favorites.  Good stuff.  Enjoy.

"White Table" is amazing.  The percussion blows me away.

Shut up.  "Motivation" rocks.  I like the jam session sound of it.

"People C'mon" may be my favorite.

But maybe "Trashcan" is my favorite.  I love me some rocking piano.

just because

"Talk of the Town"

Such a drag to want something sometime
One thing leads to another I know
Was a time wanted you for mine
Nobody knew
You arrived like a day
And passed like a cloud
I made a wish, I said it out loud
Out loud in a crowd
Everybody heard
'twas the talk of the town

It's not my place to know what you feel
I'd like to know but why should i?
Who were you then, who are you now?
Common labourer by night, by day highbrow
Back in my room I wonder, then i
Sit on the bed, look at the sky
Up in the sky
Clouds rearrange
Like the talk of the town

Maybe tomorrow, maybe someday
Maybe tomorrow, maybe someday
You've changed your place in this world
You've changed your place in this world

Oh but it's hard to live by the rules
I never could and still never do
The rules and such never bothered you
You call the shots and they follow
I watch you still from a distance then go
Back to my room, you never know
I want you, I want you but now
Who's the talk of the town?

so, someone called me a “fat bitch” on you tube

Dear Idiot on You Tube,

Thank you for your comment on a video about my Christmas decor pet peeves from two years ago.  You're right, I am fat.  I may also be a bitch, that is certainly up for discussion, but really, thanks for the fat insult.

Is that the worst thing you could come up with?  I'm fat.  Do you think I don't know that?  I've been heavy for most of my life.  Do you think I haven't been called that before?  Do you think I look in the mirror everyday and see Kate Moss?  No, I see a fat woman who has it going on.  I may be fat, but I have a brain, sass, wit, and more style than most skinny bitches I know.

And the bitch thing — I figured out years ago that any woman with an opinion will be called a bitch.  I have plenty of opinions; my rant on Christmas decor is only one of them.

So, if you want to insult me you're going to have to do better than "fat bitch."

Sincerely,
Kerry Faler

P.S.  You spelled "you're" wrong.  You meant "you're" as in the contraction for "you are" not "your."  I wouldn't expect you to know that because you're a small-minded idiot.

monday thoughts

My middle child thinks purple is a neutral.

My favorite color is houndstooth.

I'm becoming more and more like Ouiser from Steel Magnolias everyday.

There are things on my grocery list I've never purchased before because I'm brining the turkey this year.  I'm looking forward to using allspice berries.

To brine the turkey I have to find a 5 gallon bucket.  This may be a good time to tell y'all I'm not so swift when it comes to numbers, so I have no idea how big a 5 gallon bucket is or if I have one.  I should probably look into this.

Our letter carrier delivered approximately 42 million catalogs to my house last week.

My oldest daughter planted corn in my flower bed in front of the house.  She says she planted a kernel.  It is now a six inch tall plant.  I didn't think you could plant just plant a kernel.

I needed to refresh my memory as to what I need to make my sweet potato pies next week.  I keep my grandmother's sweet potato pie recipe in my email inbox.  I don't care if that's weird.

For the record, sweet potato pie is my favorite pie.

I hate meringue.

My mother is coming tomorrow.  Add me to the prayer chain.

The kids are home all week.  Add me to your Mammaw's prayer chain too.

I've lost 30something pounds this year.  This is not tooting any sort of horn; it's that now I'm in this weird stage where my pants are too big, but I don't want to buy new pants yet.  I had a brilliant idea for Diet Pants® that would have the same elastic and buttons on the inside waistband like the kids' pants, but this wouldn't help for the actual fit of the pants.  It may be back to the drawing board for Diet Pants®.

I should be cleaning something.

For you readers in far away lands like Croatia and the Netherlands, how does this blog translate?  I'm curious.

I bought new drinking glasses today.  I'm never content with the glasses in stores, so I settled on all-purpose pint glasses.  I wish we had a Crate and Barrel here, that's where I found my cow juice glasses that I love so much.

I could live in a Crate and Barrel.

I just spent 20 minutes on the phone with AT&T.  They were charging us for roadside assistance and some kind of map service.  We never ordered that.

Washing slipcovers isn't that fun.

I got a new scale today.  My son asked if he could bring it outside.  Weirdo.

Domesticity will be the death of me.

the Saturday style: advice from Joan Collins

When I was but a young lass in the '80s, I would watch Dynasty and pretend that Joan Collins was my grandmother.  She was glamorous and embodied everything fabulous that women were back in the day and I want to be her when I grow up.

When I was little, pretty much the only reason for having Barbies was to act out scenes from Dynasty.  My Barbies were exceptionally well dressed.

Have I reached the age where I can wear turbans?  I need to know.

This is how you travel, ladies.

And now, advice from Joan:

"Wear lots of makeup and big hair."  Way ahead of you, Joan.

photo study: random pictures

I take a lot of pictures.  I would like to say it's because I'm a scrapbooker, but it's because things make me laugh and I take pictures of things.

And I have a weird sense of humor.  Obviously.

For no reason I thought I'd share some of the pics I've taken that I laughed at while perusing my iPhoto when looking for one specific picture that still remains to be found.  Oh well.

"Say wha?"

This is my Lucy dog.  Lucy is a basset hound and the breed makes for great photo opportunities.

"Drunk Words with Friends."

My good friend Professor Hillary and I are horrible people.  We love the Words with Friends, but being highly competitive people as well as demented, we decided that our games needed themes.  The theme of this game was to use words associated with booze.  I lost.

"Well, guess they're not getting my money!"

This is the actual sign on the door of a nice Japanese restaurant in Baton Rouge.  Prof. Hillary and I laughed for five minutes before we took our doo-rags off and went in for lunch.

"Zat you Santa Claus?"

The hubs took me to a seedy bar to hear an '80s cover band and we saw Santa.  I spent two hours commenting on this sighting.

"But is Florence in it?"

I find the tvguide.com helpful, but when you scroll too far down the screen you land on the adult channels. And I'm not talking about VH1.  Just the idea of the Jeffersons XXX Porn Parody was enough to make me laugh.

"She looks so peaceful."

This is my friend and bidness padnuh, Megan after I shot her at ScrapFest!  Nah.  She stretched out on the floor for some reason and I told her to stay there so I could take a picture, "so it will look like I shot you."  For some reason she listened to me.

More randomness to follow.

Christmas gift idea #4

Frugal Beth reminded me about today's gift idea this morning.  I must confess, this would be a perfect gift for your favorite redheaded blogger.  You see, being a redhead, I am pigment challenged.  I'm a whiter shade of pale and have blond eyebrows that might as well be invisible.  "But Kerry, you've posted pictures of yourself on this very blog and you have eyebrows!"  Ah, that would be the magic of makeup, darlings.  Thanks to Anastasia's products from Sephora I have eyebrows.  I've penciled them in, dyed them, or used some sort of makeup on them since I was 13 because without eyebrows people look weird.  I'm not naming names (Whoopi Goldberg).

But no longer!

Christmas gift idea #4: Prada eyebrow sunglasses

Cat-eye glasses with eyebrows — genius.  I will take the ones on the left, thank you.  This will shave one minute and twenty seconds off my morning routine.

P.S. I would also like the sweater headbands in every color.  Thanks!
