baby wants a new spin randomness

Here's my favorite song for today to listen to while you read this post.

07 All Arise!

"Baby wants a new spin, baby wants a broken heart." Love that. I love the Decemberists. I'm thinking of getting a violin to see if I can still play so I can go on tour with them.

No I'm not. I hated the violin. When first learning violin it sounds like a frozen cat going through a woodchipper. It's horrid. Your fingers hurt and the rosin you use on the bow is sticky it makes a dusty powder as you play and I could go on and on. You know what I liked best about playing violin? Getting out of school to go to competitions. I never loved school.

I didn't like school until high school, where I loved journalism class and art and my friends. I also loved the rolls in the cafeteria. I would like one of those rolls right now.

If I had to do it all again I would have rather played piano, like Ben Folds. Rockin' piano.

If I had to do it all again I would have majored in something I really wanted to do and not education because let's face it, I would have been the worst teacher ever. Mainly because as a teacher, you can't say "what the hell is wrong with you?" to a student.

If I had to do it all again I would have majored in writin'.

That is too a major.

Did you read my earlier post? It took me four attempts to correctly spell "temperament."  I probably shouldn't admit that, but whatevs. You know, the Mac red-underlines 1/3 of my words because they're made up, so for a minute I thought I made that one up too. I like making up words. Superfantastic. Besides making up words, I also like to use dashes and hyphenate words, but you've probably already picked up on that. I blame Emily Dickinson and T.S. Eliot for some of my writing style. They're dead. I can blame them if I want.

"The Engine Driver" may be my favorite song tomorrow. Guess what I'm doing for next week's Tunes You Need Tuesday. Go ahead guess.

Have you ever taken a drink from a glass you thought was of Sprite and lo and behold it was water? That's the kind of soul-stirring day I've had.

The kids want me to take them to a Mardi Gras Parade Friday night. Ugh. I love where I live, but I hate where I live this time of year. The roads on parade routes close and everybody goes nuts over beads made in China that probably have lead paint. Yes, I said it. I don't like begging for beads. They're plastic, not pearls or precious gems. And don't get me started on the time we went to a parade and some people threw Tootsie Rolls. But I wouldn't mind a new set of Mardi Gras cups.

You don't know how happy I am that my iPhone has finally learned that when I type "hell" I don't mean "he'll."

Have you ever seen Loni Love do stand-up? When she said she's not a drug addict because she likes wings, not weed I almost fell off the sofa. The woman is funny and I know funny, look her up. She also said she'd rather be on Cops than Flava of Love.

Top Chef is on tonight and Paula Deen is a guest judge. I hope the challenge is for the cheftestants to use a pound of butter in each recipe and say "y'all" and "spatuler" a lot. They had Muppets on last week, so anything is possible. Plus, it's Bravo.

Do you remember when Bravo was only on for half the day and shared the channel with some other channel? I've been watching it forever. I remember back in the day watching Michael Hutchence from INXS in a movie called Dogs in Space. Yes, it's a real movie — look it up — it was the '80s, people did cocaine and weird movies were made and then run on Bravo. Oh, and Hutchence played a drug addicted singer in a band. It's like art imitating life imitating art.

I'm sleepy. Goodnight.

on e-manners and general douchebaggery

When did it become commonplace to be an punk ass jerk for no reason? I count my lucky stars that I do not have to go into a workplace everyday (because let me tell you, my temperament couldn't take it) and that I work from home. I usually don't have to make a lot of phone calls for my business and mostly communicate via email, thus making my dealings with people rather nice.

Last week I had to call someone about ordering something and things got unpleasant. I'm an amateur graphic designer and I don't profess to be a graphics genius, but Mr. Jerkface got all "I know more than you" before he even knew I was the designer of the artwork I was having screen printed. Sure, insult my graphic designer who happens to be me — go ahead. And while you're at it take the "you're a woman and can't possibly understand the computer terms I'm using" attitude with me as well. Well, he didn't know he was dealing with She Who Will Not Be Messed With and I went all I KNOW YOU DIDN'T on him. Trust me, I can go from America's Sweetheart to Bitch faster than Whitney Houston can say "oh, hell to the no." When I talked to him this week his douchebag attitude had changed. Gee, wonder why.

This morning I emailed a shop about getting a pricey item at a discount in exchange for promoting her shop. I was practically Splenda-sweet in my email and didn't ask for anything for free. Not only did she send me a full-on bitch reply, she scolded me for not reading her site policy, which she stated was on her home page (it wasn't, it was on her policy page). If I felt like it, I would send a reply to her reply, telling her where things are located on her website, but I think I'll let her go ahead and feel like an awesome person. I also have designed a few websites, so I know a little something on how to find something on the web. Anysite, she lost a customer.

I don't understand the non-hesitation to be asinine. Is it that we no longer have face-to-face dealings with actual human beings anymore? Does the anonymity of hiding behind a phone or computer give one the right to be a douchebag to anyone who has the nerve to contact you? In both of the communications I'm writing about I was attempting to purchase something from shops that are open for business. Being an ass is a good way to lose business. As a business owner, I realize that and I don't understand why others fail to grasp that concept.

Yesterday I received an email from someone who was angry about receiving an email newsletter to which she had subscribed. I didn't understand that one.

I wonder if manners have gone the way of the typewriter and are no longer relevant. I hope not.

Thank you for reading and please come back tomorrow for something else.

Love,

Kerry

P.S.  Please and Thank You are still nice to hear, aren't they?

random monday randomness

This has been a long day. I didn't sleep well last night, this is not news. After putting the kids on their respective buses, I went back to bed for a bit, but it wasn't enough. Lack of sleep makes the day seem longer. I would like to take a life sabbatical and go somewhere to sleep for a few months.

I heart The Decemberists.

Have you heard the latest on Baz Luhrmann's new Great Gatsby? They're going to start filming next month in AUSTRALIA in 3D. No, I'm not kidding. The great American novel will be filmed Down Under because I suppose it looks just like Long Island. Of course I know one can film a movie anywhere — but this is Gatsby. And 3D? Why? I would say that F. Scott Fitzgerald is rolling in his grave, but he mocked himself when he worked in Hollywood, calling himself a "hack," so I don't think he would be surprised with this news. And so, we will have Leonardo DiCaprio (as Gatsby), Tobey Maguire (Nick Carraway), and Carey Mulligan (Daisy) stepping into the 3D world of Gatsby. I can't see Mulligan as the beautiful siren Daisy. I'm talking about Daisy from the novel, not Mia Farrow's Daisy from the 1974 film (the voice — no). I didn't buy Farrow's Daisy either. Gatsby is one of my favorite novels; I would hate to see another bad film version.

My back hurts.

I have an aversion to stores with "dollar" in the name. Also stores with "mart" in the name. Also, stores that spell their name wrong on purpose or rhyme. I can't help it, this is who I am.

Have you ever done a Google Image search of yourself? It's fun.

No one has emailed me saying they'd like to contribute to my business idea fund. I guess Donald Trump isn't reading the blog after all.

One of my daughter's friends came over to play and said tap water was "gross" when she asked for water and I gave her a glass of tap water. I felt like giving her my longwinded explanation of why I don't buy bottled water, but I didn't think the 9 year-old would care. I gave her scotch instead.

I didn't give her scotch — that would be ridiculous. I gave her a White Russian.

Should I wear a big flower thing in my hair for ScrapFest or something else? I'm thinking a Las Vegas showgirl headdress, but I can't decide. In hot pink.

Hot pink is definitely a neutral. For me.

My mom used the phrase "off the chain" inappropriately today. I said "you know that means something is good, right?" She said "I hear the kids say it at school, I don't know what means bad and what means good." She works at my old high school and is now picking up slang. This cannot end well.

saturday night random thoughts

While in the Walgreens drive-thru this afternoon, I came upon a brilliant idea. I'm going to open a drive-thru drugstore/coffee shop because I almost always want coffee and I frequent the Walgreens for a plethora of items/medications. I'm not a pharmacist, nor am I a barista, but I believe this is a brazillion dollar business idea. If you happen to have a bunch of money you'd like to invest in my idea, send me an email.

Ask me about my other business ideas. Really, I should start a business start-up think tank. I would put Zuckerberg to shame. Plus, I would conduct all my business meetings in cocktail dresses just for fun. It would be Mad Men 24/7. With less booze.

Would someone please put Pulp Fiction in chronological order for me? Thanks.

I read this headline on Huffington Post tonight: Aretha Franklin Gives Up Chitterlings, Pigs' Feet & Ham Hocks. I don't know about you, but I'm with Aretha on this and in support I'm giving up those foods too. At least during Lent.

Oh, I just remembered, I don't do Lent. Darn.

My local Target is remodeling to make way for a bigger grocery section. When I went there on Friday, you would have thought I was in a foreign country — that's how confusing the place is. The good news is now they carry Rotel tomatoes. Hey Aretha — did you give up Rotel dip?

For no reason this afternoon I read the titles of movies on LIfetime.

I am deeply disturbed that there is a perfume called Vulva. Yes, I know what you want to ask. Yes, that's why I'm disturbed. Yes, I know that is gross. And you're welcome that I didn't put the commercial on the blog. You're very welcome.

Mitt Romney's cousin told me I was funny on Twitter, so I have that going for me.

I wanted to go through the daiquiri drive-thru tonight (yes, we have those in Louisiana), but I thought the drive-thru person might be judgmental because I had Popeye's chicken in the seat next to me and the kids in the minivan. I have anxiety over what the drive-thru people will think of me — this is why medication exists.

I'll also tell you that when I was in the working world in Atlanta and left work for lunch I hated telling co-workers where I was going because I didn't want to bring anything back for them. I didn't want drive-thru people thinking I was eating for six. I almost always went to Boston Market. Sometimes I only got their creamed spinach and a piece of cornbread. I miss the Boston Market.

Once in Atlanta the hubs and I were walking into a tiny Mexican restaurant when a van pulled up and unloaded dead goats. It is not a coincidence that I almost always get cheese enchiladas at Mexican restaurants.

Something is in my eye. More later.

a super rare treat

Y'all know I'm a huge Counting Crows fan. Well, today I managed to find a super duper rare MP3 demo of an unreleased song, "Barely Out of Tuesday." Or should I say a clean-sounding non-concert version. It's just Adam Duritz on piano and his voice. It's by far my favorite song. If you use the You Tubes, you'll find a recording of the concert version in which he tells the story of how the song was written, but there seem to be only two recordings of this song. That makes it special.

It's special for other reasons too. Anyway, after years of searching for this song, I thought I'd share it.

Barely Out Of Tuesday 1

For me, it doesn't get much better than that.
