30 day song challenge: day 10 – a song that makes you fall asleep

*I'm going taking the song challenge to mean "of all time," not genre-specific. Any of these songs are subject to change at any time.

I can't fall asleep to music. I've never really been able to. When I've tried to fall asleep with headphones on I've found things I hadn't heard in songs before and that keeps me up. So, I'm posting a sleepy song instead. "You Are the Everything" mentions drifting off to sleep; it's one of my favorite R.E.M. songs. I've adored it from the first time I heard it. It's dreamy and beautiful. Enjoy.

random Tuesday thoughts

1299113761spendTomorrow Prof. Dr. Hilljary and I are going to P.F. Chang's and shopping in Baton Rouge. I will be wearing my new flip flops with bows and rhinestones because Wednesdays call for that sort of thing.

I haven't shopped in a while. At least not in a physical store.

I may buy new earrings.

It is unnerving that I have lost an earring that are pretty much my "everyday" earrings. This ranks high on my aggravation scale because I do not lose things.

Really.

There is a new thing — Christian pole dancing. It's called Pole Fitness for Jesus. This is totally how I'm explaining my ankle injury to people.

I woke up with what feels like a sprained ankle. I must have been pole dancing in my sleep. It hurts.

What if I really have been sleepwalking and pole dancing in my sleep? I may have to put up security cameras to get to the bottom of this.

My mom wrote "what's with the hair?" on my Facebook wall the other day. I called her to find out what she was talking about and she said she likes it better curly and asked what the "doodad" was in my hair. I like hair clippies with flowers on them. I've decided to make hair clippies and headbands with various things on them just to aggravate the mom. As soon as I get more glue sticks I will begin this project.

Of course, all hair clippy inspiration comes from Helen Hunt in the classic film Girls Just Want to Have Fun. Here's a pic to refresh your memory.

Girls-Just-Want-to-Have-Fun-Helen-Hunt-3I promise you I will be wearing something similar in a pic on this very blog in the next day or two.

No, I'm not kidding. There is stuff around here I'm just dying to glue to a headband. In fact, I may make my friends clippies as gifts. I think JBC may need a bowtie pasta clippy. Stacy needs a beer can headband. Megan is getting Germ-X clippy. Hilljary is getting chopsticks that I will pocket from P.F. Chang's tomorrow.

I'm keeping the dinosaur clippies.

I'm going to confess something. Sometimes when the children have homework that requires them to read passages aloud, I want to run from the room. Reading aloud and speaking in public doesn't bother me in the least, but listening to anyone read is torture. I do not know why I'm like this, just add it to my lengthy list of neuroses.

If I had a copy of the DSM-IV I'd make that into a hair clippy. Might be heavy though.

If you don't know what that means, don't worry about it.

For some reason I forgot to so a ScrapFest! wrap-up for the blog, but you should know that weirdness prevailed. I will try to write a wrap-up this week or sometime in the near future. Also, people are crazy.

Also, people told me I was "as cute as a button" and that made me want to throw up and I hate throwing up. Really, I tried to be bulimic once and I couldn't do it. That was a long time ago.

Who wants cheesecake?

30 day song challenge: day 8 – a song that you know all the words to

*I'm going taking the song challenge to mean "of all time," not genre-specific. Any of these songs are subject to change at any time.

I know all the words to a brazillion songs, so it was hard to pick just one, but I narrowed it down to "Wham! Rap" because 1) it's a rap, 2) it has British references to being unemployed, and 3) they're wearing capri pants in this video.

Here are the lyrics to my favorite part of the song:

IF YOU'RE A PUB MAN
OR A CLUB MAN
MAYBE A JET BLACK GUY WITH A HIP HI-FI
A WHITE COOL CAT WITH A TRILBY HAT
MAYBE LEATHER AND STUDS IS WHERE YOU'RE AT
MAKE THE MOST OF EVERY DAY
DON'T LET HARD TIMES STAND IN YOUR WAY
GIVE A WHAM GIVE A BAM BUT DON'T GIVE A DAMN
COS THE BENEFIT GANG ARE GONNA PAY!

30 day song challenge: day 7 – a song that reminds you of a certain event

I'm sure I'll get flack for this, but I don't care. The first election I voted in was 1992. I voted for Bill Clinton. I also did a little campaigning for him. Clinton used the superfantastic "Don't Stop" by Fleetwood Mac as his campaign theme song. I believe this got him elected. It also got Fleetwood Mac back together, which is the bomb.

Also, Lindsay Buckingham is way sexy.

and now something funny

Okay, I thought I'd post something funny after the serious post.

This is "My Drunk Kitchen," which resembles the unfilmed nightly cooking show that goes on in my kitchen every night which I have dubbed "Cooking with the Wino." No, I'm not a wino (I don't drink wine), but I like the word "wino."  There is cursing, (because cooking is better with cursing) so don't watch in front of the chillens.

from The Daily What

stuff in the world

1287440596hairtragedy There are a lot of things going on in the world — tragedies and war and bad things in general, so I thought I'd take to the blog.

When America invaded Iraq after 9/11, my oldest was too young to ask questions. After hurricane Katrina she was old enough to ask questions and to be afraid for months afterward when we saw storms on the news. Now she and her sister are asking about earthquakes, tsunamis, and nuclear disasters. I've explained that it was a natural disaster that damaged a nuclear power plant, but that led to the questions "what does nuclear mean? and what is radiation?"

Parenting has never been simple, but we are parenting in different times. I've had to rely on my parenting partner, God, on how to answer my children when I have no words. This mom stuff is hard and though this isn't a mommy blog, I felt that I should address what's going on with what is on the minds of our children right now. Kids are savvier than we ever were. My children will watch the news with me when I feel it is appropriate and I encourage them to ask questions. They are only allowed on three websites and are closely supervised because the majority of the Internet is not intended for kids.

Chances are if your children are old enough to watch television they know something has happened in Japan. They may even know there is a crazy man in Libya. The thing is: they don't need to know everything, they just need to be reassured that they are safe and that you love them. As parents it's okay to ask if your children are scared about something.

And it's okay to tell them you don't know everything either, but that you love them and will protect them from anything.

Tomorrow I'll be back to posting a song for the 30 Days.

Love,

Kerry

30 day song challenge: day 5 – a song that reminds you of someone

*I'm going taking the song challenge to mean "of all time," not genre-specific. Any of these songs are subject to change at any time.

"Still Fighting It" is really a phenomenal song for a few reasons. It reminds me of several things — growing up, children, home, and what we hope to be. When Ben sings "and you're so much like me, I'm sorry" it kills me. I feel that way sometimes when my children do certain things. So, it's not so much as a "this song reminds me of someone" as it is a song that reminds me of what life is right now for me and for so many of my friends. There are many songs I could have listed here and I've gone back and forth with two or three of them, but I'm not going to do post them because it's my blog and I'll do what I want.

DON'T MAKE ME TURN THIS BLOG AROUND.
