I figured out while I was doing my covers series from Grey’s Anatomy, I found a pattern that emerged. A lot of the songs were slowed down and the vocals outshined the music. The lyrics were classics, but you really heard them in those covers.
This is what I discovered. There are singers I’ve loved forever — Nick Drake, Elliott Smith, Benjamin Francis Leftwich — and Phosphorescent to some degree — and newer bands like The Head and the Heart, The Wind and the Wave, and Shakey Graves have a similar vibe.
Here’s Elliott Smith’s “Ballad of Big Nothing.”
And here’s “Happiness is Not a Place” by the Wind And the Wave.
