4.279/365: dammit, Gary

Today it was announced that most certainly, the Zodiac killer was Gary Francis Poste, who died in 2018. He had a matching scar as well as matching DNA left at the murder of Cheri Jo Bates in 1966. You don’t get much more certain than that.

A group called the Case Breakers, a team of over 40 cold case investigators composed of former law enforcement investigators, military intelligence officers, and journalists made the announcement. They’ve also worked on other famous cold cases.

Despite the evidence, the San Francisco Police Department and California Department of Justice is drilling calling the case open.

Because I’m an old school true crime aficionado (I was cold case when cold case wasn’t cool, circa 1990), I’m surprised it’s not Arthur Leigh Allen. There was so much circumstantial evidence — it’s just nuts. I’m certain people have been convicted on less circumstantial evidence. I’m positive.

If you’re not familiar with the case or want to know mode, there are hundreds of articles, a few movies, as well as documentaries. It’s absolutely fascinating. And fascinating that it took 55 years to identify him. The murders are varied and odd. There are mystery ciphers he sent to local newspapers to print. It’s everything you’d expect in a epic thriller novel, but real.

As for me, my thoughts are summed up below.
