Tunes Tuesday: Delta Spirit

Delta Spirit is fantastical.  That's all you really need to know.

But here's the intro of their Wiki:

Delta Spirit is a band from San DiegoCalifornia. They are often dubbed as a “hybrid of rock and northern soul” or as an "Americana/soul" group. The group incorporates unconventional instruments (such as trash cans lids and orchestral bass drums), the multi-instrumentalism of the members and the vocal delivery and religiously/spiritually-themed lyrics of singer Matt Vasquez. The group consists of Jon Jameson (bassist), Brandon Young (percussionist), Matthew Vasquez (vocalist/guitarist), and Kelly Winrich (multi-instrumentalist).

I found out about Delta Spirit from a music site that I stumbled on and instantly loved them.  Each song is better than the last.  I've downloaded their albums History From Below and Ode to Sunshine and I really can't say enough good things about them.   These guys are the real deal.  I think you'll like them.

"Bushwick Blues" is the first song I listened to, so I'm offering it up first.  I'm including several songs today because it was hard to pick favorites.  Good stuff.  Enjoy.

"White Table" is amazing.  The percussion blows me away.

Shut up.  "Motivation" rocks.  I like the jam session sound of it.

"People C'mon" may be my favorite.

But maybe "Trashcan" is my favorite.  I love me some rocking piano.

the Saturday style: advice from Joan Collins

When I was but a young lass in the '80s, I would watch Dynasty and pretend that Joan Collins was my grandmother.  She was glamorous and embodied everything fabulous that women were back in the day and I want to be her when I grow up.

When I was little, pretty much the only reason for having Barbies was to act out scenes from Dynasty.  My Barbies were exceptionally well dressed.

Have I reached the age where I can wear turbans?  I need to know.

This is how you travel, ladies.

And now, advice from Joan:

"Wear lots of makeup and big hair."  Way ahead of you, Joan.

cough, laugh, cough

I have bronchitis.  Bronchitis pretty much forces me to take to the sofa or my bed to watch tv and talk to friends on Facebook.  Last night I was up coughing, watching Late Night with Jimmy Fallon and while watching the clip I'm posting below, I started a laughing/coughing fit that made me reach for my inhaler.

The guy who says "I don't want to see that either" is priceless and man, I wish I would have hung out with Drunk George Bush back in the day.  Can you imagine?

the pixies are still fantastic

Did you watch 120 Minutes back in the day when MTV still played music?  I miss that show.  It was a fantastic show to find new music, specifically modern rock, which is what I listened to then and still love now.  I wish there was a music channel (that played good music) and that they would give me a show introducing new bands to the people.  That is part 2 of my dream job (part 1 being my magazine writer career, but that was before all the magazines started folding).

I remember watching The Pixies on 120 Minutes and thinking how cool bassist Kim Deal was.  The Pixies were a band that came out at the same time as lots of modern rock bands, but they were different.  Today you can hear their influence in bands like Radiohead.  And you should be able to hear the new Pixies album soon from what hear on the interwebs.

Here are my two favorite Pixies songs, "Gigantic" and "Here Comes Your Man."

"Here Comes Your Man" is still pretty fantastic 20 years later.  It's one of those songs.

crafts for poor people

As you may have guessed from the title of this blog, I enjoy the crafting.  Not so much crafting as scrapbooking (although I have been known to make fabulous Christmas ornaments, mainly my faux mercury glass ornaments).  Anycraft, I've been artsy crafty for as long as I can remember and I grew up less than wealthy, so I love the idea of Amy Sedaris' new book, Simple Times: Crafts for Poor People.

Sedaris is a comedian and the book is written in jest, but I assure you, when I'm elected Something or Other, I will bring crafting to the poor.  There will be a social program for crafts.  Crafting is a right of life just like healthcare and cell phones and it's about time our government recognized this.

Let's watch Amy Sedaris on the Today Show.

I want her dress.

Also, non-crafters may not realize the problem of craft-induced back and neck pain.  This is exactly why we have massage therapists at ScrapFest!  Thank  you, Amy for bringing this problem to the public's attention.

P.S. Drunk/medicated crafting is where it's at, but don't tell anyone I said that.

fall advice from Stefon

My SNL favorite, Stefon, was back on Weekend Update this past Saturday.  Here is his advice if you're going to NYC this fall.

"Look over there in the corner — is that Mick Jagger?  No, it's a fat kid on a Slip 'n Slide.  His knees look like biscuits and he's ready to party" is going to be my new way to distract people in conversation.  Love the Stefon.

tunes you need Tuesday: Pomplamoose

If you haven't heard my new favorite band yet, well, you're about to.  I've recently discovered the musical fabulousness that is Pomplamoose.  Their name comes from the French word for grapefruit in case you didn't know (really, this blog is so freaking educational).  Pomplamoose is Nataly Dawn and Jack Conte.  Just two people who possess incredible musical talent.

Take a listen.

Pomplamoose has produced three albums available on iTunes and makes fun VideoSongs for their You Tube channel.  I love the concept of a song with a video blog at the end.  Very fun.

"It's all for show, so bake me cookies."  Love it.

How fun are Pomplamoose?  Very fun.  And way good.

I adore that song.  Love the quirkiness of it and the idea that someone in a relationship has an expiration date. And the Cary Grant clips don't hurt at all.

"Another Day" may be my favorite.

"Another hour
Flying by
I've yet to shower
Yet to dry
And if you told me I was wonderful I probably would
wonder why."

Fantastic.

Of course, they covered "Beat It" for their album of covers.  I'm also partial to their version of "September" by Earth Wind and Fire.

Have  I mentioned what a xylophone playing fool I was as a kid?  Oh, yeah.  I rocked the glockenspiel too.  I rocked it hard.  Can I join Pomplamoose?

I hope y'all love the Pomplamoose as much as I do.  Go download their albums and support good music.

mr. t knows best

If you've been reading the Kerry Blog for awhile, you know I love the Mr. T.  I love the Mr. T even more when he appears on television shows you would NEVER expect him to be a guest on.  For instance, "Taking Stock" on the Bloomburg channel.  Yes, it's a show about stocks and investments, so naturally, they would have Mr. T on for a segment on gold.

Oh, yes the did.

I will now be using Gold Promise for my retirement plan.
