Owls

EDIT: We came to the conclusion that the stamps belonged to Anna Bess and somehow ended up in my stamp tote when we went to Scrap ‘n On the River in July.  I knew I didn’t buy those things.

I hate owls, they’re creep city. Why did I buy these? Did I buy these stamps or is someone trying to give me a stroke?

no sleep ’til Birmingham

Things were looking good for me last night, I finished packing my scrapbook stuff and got in bed at 11:30 — that’s early.  I tried really hard to sleep, really I did.  Sleep wouldn’t come.  So, I got out my laptop, tried to order a dress, didn’t order the dress; the ship date is next month.  Tried to find the dress at another online store, only Nordstrom carries the plus-sized line.  Of course.  Gave up on that, wrote an email, ripped pages out of scrapbook magazines for my inspiration journal, turned off the computer, looked at the ceiling.  I tried not to think of the bird or bat or ghost that’s in our attic.  At two, I decided to take some Benadryl, got back in bed and closed my eyes.  The last time I looked at the clock it was a quarter ’til 3.  At 4 am on the dot, Katie and Andrew sound like a herd of elephants coming in our room.  Here’s how the rest of my night went.

  • 4am tell Katie and Andrew to get back in bed.
  • 4:15 tell Katie the smoke detector is a good thing and will not talk to her like the one in the movie they showed at school.  Tell Andrew to get out our bathroom 20 times
  • 4:30 give up on them getting back in their beds, tell them to get in bed with me
  • 4:30-5:30 tell Andrew to stop playing with Scott’s alarm clock, to get his feet out of Katie’s face, to get back in bed, to stop touching my hair, to stop getting all the way under the covers, to stop touching my face, tell him my boobs are not hills to launch his imaginary rocket from, tell him to lay down, tell him to lay down, tell him to lay down; tell Katie to ignore Andrew
  • 5:30 tell the kids I’ve had it and they better lay down and be quiet because we have 45 more minutes to try to sleep.
  • 5:30-6 wonder to myself why we thought three was a good number of children to have.  Can’t think of a single reason why.  Ponder selling kids to the circus.  Ponder taking a sabbatical from mommyhood.
  • 6 throw the covers back, jump out of bed and dramatically announce that we’re getting up, ’cause I can’t take it anymore.
  • 6:02 Scott calls, asking how my night went.  Close eyes, count to 10, and calmly tell him I have not slept and that Katie and Andrew…he tells me he’ll call me right back.  Throw the phone on the bed, say every curse word I can think of in my head, not outloud because the two sleep theives are looking at me.

I hope your night went much better than mine.  At 9 am I’ll be dropping off Andrew at MDO and will not see my hubs or munchkins ’til Sunday afternoon.  At this point, I don’t care if I get a layout finished or not, I just want to sleep alone and not have to use concealer for the circles under my tired blue eyes.

Y’all have a good weekend, I know I plan to.

a little perfection for your Wednesday

I debated on whether or not to post this, it’s been a weird day. Too much to go into, so I’ll spare you.

This afternoon, among other things, I’ve been downloading tunes for my trip and came across one of my favorite songs and I thought I’d share.  It’s “Space Age Love Song” by A Flock of Seagulls (AFOS for those in the know).  I think it’s a beautiful little song, simple little love song, simple perfection.  You may disagree and that’s okay, friends disagree from time to time, even interwebs friends.  Anyway, it’s a little Tunes you Need Tuesday on Wednesday.  This is a song that always makes me smile and I thought I’d share.  And the fact that WordPress doesn’t allow me to post just a music file and that I have to post a video is my small gift to you: the gift of bad 80’s hair and bad special effects.  Oh, you’re welcome, no — really, no need to thank me.

why I blog

So, I’m not a political blogger.  I just blog whatever’s on my mind.  I’m not a political blogger because my views are my views and I don’t want to shove them down anyone’s throat and I’m a lover, not a fighter.  I love politics, always have, but if I had wanted to go into politics, I would have.  I’m at least going to apply to be a political pundit on CNN so I can spend time with Anderson Cooper.  CNN needs me.  Seriously, they need a fiery redhead who would flirt with Anderson.  He’s my boo.

Anyway, back to the blog.  I’m too ADD to write on one subject.  I started out writing a scrapbooking blog, but I trailed off.  Big shock there.  My friends know I can’t have a conversation without going down a side road.  For example, Megan called a few minutes ago to discuss our trip for tomorrow.  She was asking what time I’m picking her up, then I told her about the jeans I got from Lane Bryant and she told me about how today there is a 20% off sale on top our coupon we get in the mail.  Then we talked about what we’re wearing for the trip and how I’d like a new pair of black knit pants (my fave scrapbook attire), but I have to get the Lane Bryant cropped pants because the regular ones are a foot too long for me.  Have I mentioned I’m short, yes I have.  Never did figure out what time I’m picking her up.  This happens all the time.

Like I’ve said numerous times, I have a great memory, but it is extremely limited.  I know that doesn’t make sense, but just go with me on this one.  At some point everyday I walk into a room and have no idea why I needed to be there.  I know this is a common thing for lots of people, really, but I do it a lot.  I forget to take off my makeup at least once a week before going to bed.  I’ve left the house in slippers several times and had to go back for shoes.  I frequently take off the earring on my right ear to talk on the phone, putting it down in a random place and find it days later.  Because I take my right earring out so often, I have discovered I’m wearing one earring while in the car while I’m applying lipstick.  Oh, and because I rarely remember to bring my purse in from the car, I have to apply lipstick in the car because that’s where all my lipsticks are.  All 30 of them that are mostly variations of the same rusty reddish-brown color.  I buy the same lipsticks over and over because I can’t remember which ones I have.  Don’t ask me how many tubes of L’Oreal French Toast (or Cinnamon Toast or whatever it’s called) I have.  I can’t remember what it’s called, so I keep buying it — here’s how dumb I am — I peruse the L’Oreal lipsticks at Target all the time because I love their colors, every time I see French Toast (or whatever) I think, “Oooo-that color would look really good on me.”  No joke, moron, that’s because you’re wearing it and you already have 7 or 8 of that color.   I have enough to last me the next decade, I’m sure.

But, I can remember what my bff from highschool was wearing when we met.  I can quote Shakespeare word for word.  I know every line of Pretty in Pink.  I was in a department store (it was Beall-Ladymon, not sure if I spelled that correctly) when I first heard “Nowhere Man” by the Beatles and that was my introduction to my favorite band.  I can recall conversations from almost 20 years ago and tell you where the conversation took place. No one else remembers, so why do I?  A good memory is a blessing and a curse.  I can’t forget things I’d like to forget.  A good memory is sometimes overrated.  Especially when you remember stupid junk.  My first highschool boyfriend wore Polo cologne and chewed Juicy Fruit gum.  A boy in 8th grade told me I bounced when I walked — I thought he was referencing my cheery disposition, that was not the case.  My stalker from college never game me back my Fleetwood Mac cd.  Why do I think of that when I hear a Fleetwood Mac song?

I’m not crazy.  My brain just doesn’t stop.  Like, ever.  So, that’s why this blog is so scatter-brained.  It’s pretty much like me.  If I see something funny from a website I want to share it with you.  If I feel like live-blogging the election results, I’ll go with it.  When a song’s been on my mind lately, I’ll tell you about it.  If I’ve done a scrapbook layout I really liked, I’ll post it.  If I’ve done something really stupid, you know I’ll post that.  If something is bothering me, I’ll tell you about it.  Chances are there’s one or two of you out there who may relate, but I don’t know.  I know some of my readers in real life, but I’ve never met a bunch of you and chances are we’ll never be sitting next to each other on a plane or have lunch together.  And that’s okay.  But, if you’re sitting on a plane one day or waiting for your number to be called at the DMV and you see a chubby redhead who seems preoccupied with her thoughts and probably talking to herself out loud or singing “Kind and Generous” or “Positively Lost Me” quietly to herself and writing in a pink croco datebook, it may be me.

I’ll be in Birmingham for the next few days, but bringing my laptop, so I may post.  Y’all be good and I’ll talk to ya later.

election night LIVE blogging

So, I thought for funsies, how ’bout some live blogging for election night.  Let me be your Katie Couric for the night, or at least until I get bored.

8:08 — Obama has 174 Electoral votes, McCain has 49.  The Obama camp is chilling the champagne.

8:12 — Looks like McCain will lose Pennsylvania, a state he campaigned hard in.  Whoops.

8:14 — What is it about Brian Williams from NBC that gets on my nerves?

8:16 — It’s either the hair or the voice or both.  Commercial.

8:17 — Let’s check Facebook.  Oh, look, Scott’s quoting Sting.

8:20 — Back to the election.  The map’s looking colorful.  Some guy will defeat some other guy in some state in Kentucky.  It was a fierce battle.  Wolf Blitzer is fierce.

8:22 — Bring on Anderson Cooper.  There he is, looking good for the big night.  I’m voting for Anderson for cutest newsguy.

8:24 — Why are they showing Hank Williams, Jr?  Is there a football game on tonight, too?  Why does he always wear sunglasses?

8:34 — Molly came downstairs because her loose tooth is bothering her.  I gave her Tylenol and sent her back to bed.  Better stay there, too, this is an important night for tv.

8:41 — CNN projects Obama to win Ohio.  No Republican in modern times has been elected president without winning Ohio.  I believe Lincoln was the last one, but that was a long, long time ago.  CNN guy with the magic board says he would need a miracle to win.  Bet McCain started praying.

8:44 — The Senate is going blue.  Oh, here’s one of the commericals that’s all sciencey and all I hear is “wah wah wah wah wah.”

8:47 — What the hell is wine consignment?  Can you put wine on consignment?  Why not just buy it in a store like everyone else?  Whatev.

8:49 — They’re projecting McCain to win Louisiana.  Not surprized.  Bring back my boyfriend Anderson Cooper.

8:52 — I know they say Anderson’s gay, but he’s cute.  The silver fox of tv anchors.  Tell me all about the election, Anderson.

8:55 — I don’t know if Scott’s going to read this or if he knows about my celebrity crush on Anderson Cooper, but I don’t think he has anything to worry about.  I don’t think I’m Anderson’s type anyway.

9:01 — Wolf Blitzer and his beard are talking about going home once Obama gets to 270 votes.  Oh, Wolf, you can’t do that, Anderson says.  David Gergen says Obama will have to decide if he wants to unite the country.  Brilliant idea.

9:05 — How do I become a political pundit?  I think I could do that.  Plus, I’d get to hang out with Anderson and play with that magic board.  I want one of those.

9:08 — James Carville kind of looks like Golum from Lord of the Rings, but he sounds kind of like Foghorn Leghorn.

9:09 — The pundits are about to fight.  Cool.  There is yelling.  Calm down white boy in the blue tie.

9:12 — Arkansas goes to McCain.  Shocker.  Commercial.  I have a toothache, where did that come from.  Still never had a cavity at 34.  I think it’s my wisdom tooth trying to come in.  This happens every once in a while.  Weird, huh?

9:19 — The magic board again.  I think any minute Foghorn Carville is going to run up the the magic board and mess it all up.

9:22 — Another big shock, McCain wins Texas.  Did anyone think Obama had a chance in Texas?  No.  The cowboys aren’t voting for Obama.

9:46 — Oh, hell to the no.  I took a little break to put Andrew to bed and now Anderson’s talking to a hologram of WILL.I.AM  (rapper) old school Star Wars style.  Where’s R2-D2?  Oh, no.  Anderson said there will be more holograms ahead.  This is creepy.

9:50 — There’s the science “wah wah” commerical again.  Oh, it’s for Exxon-Mobil.  What?  I still don’t know what the guy’s talking about.

9:55 — The CNN people are saying age was probably a bigger figure in the election than race.  Hmmm.

9:59 — Wolf and his beard said Virginia goes to Obama.  Now they’re projecting Obama will win.  Wow.  They’re showing the crowd in Chicago — they’re going crazy.

10:06 — The crowds are still going crazy.  I actually wasn’t on the Obama bandwagon, but I get it.  I wasn’t for McCain either, and am glad the Bush period is over.  The pundits are kind of stunned.  They really don’t know what to say and are somber.

10:14 — Just saw Jesse Jackson and now Al Sharpton.  Jesse was peeking over someone’s head.  You’d think he’d be on tv tonight.

10:18 — McCain’s concession speech.  People booed when he said he called Obama.  That was rude.

10:21 — Decent speech.   I’m out.   Going to go talk to friends on Facebook.  See y’all tomorrow.

And peeps, I’ve read the comments, y’all play nice. There’s enough democracy for everyone.
