scrambled eggs

If you're a reader of this blog you know I love Jimmy Fallon.  You also I know I love Paul McCartney.  Like a lot.  McCartney was a guest on Late Night and this happened.

I really need a talk show.

reality bites

I watched Reality Bites this weekend and was reminded that the movie easily had the best soundtrack of any movie in the '90s.  Yes — any.  With old and new music from Squeeze, The Juliana Hatfield Three, Crowded House, World Party, and Lisa Loeb, the soundtrack was both fresh and familiar and it rocked.

For your entertainment, here are my favorites off the Reality Bites soundtrack.  The songs are about wanting. That's pretty clear.  If you remember the movie, you know that was a theme as well, beautifully supported by the music.  All of these are on my iPod and they would be a good addition to yours as well.

"Tempted" is in my top five of favorite songs of all time, so it's up first.

Juliana Hatfield is just fantastic.  This is a great one and I've still never heard anything quite like this song. The video is from my old MTV favorite, "120 Minutes."

Do y'all remember World Party?  They had the song "Put the Message in the Box."  "When You Come Back to Me" is just as good.

Lisa Loeb has two songs on the soundtrack, "Stay" and "Fools Like Me."  I've always loved "Fools Like Me."

Crowded House is simply fantastic.  Here is "Locked Out."

And lastly, because I couldn't find a video for this song, I made an MP3 for you of Me Phi Me's "Revival!"  This is the mad note. This is the song playing when Ben Stiller's character drives up next to Winona Ryder at the red light.  Good stuff.

Take a dip and revive yourself.

12 Revival!

This may be one of my favorite posts I've done.  Love the Reality Bites.

the weirdest thing I’ve seen today

I thought that the woman I overheard at the nail salon saying she was getting her cat an iPad for Christmas would be the weirdest thing I came across today, BUT NO.  People of the interwebs, I give you a Norwegian video of mostly has been celebrities singing/lip synching "Let it Be."

Yes, that was Roger Moore, Huey Lewis, Jason Alexander, Ricki Lake, Josie Biesett, Alberto Tomba, George Wendt, Philip, Michael Thomas, Glenn Close, Pamela Anderson, Leslie Nielsen, Dolph Lundgren, Kelly McGillis, Tonya Harding, Steve Guttenberg, Carlton from The Fresh Prince of Bel Air, Dee Snider, Right Said Fred, freakin' Judd Nelson, Kathleen Turner, Sherilyn Fenn and the chick who played "Laura Palmer", Daryl Hannah, Lou Ferrigno, Ricky Schroder, and Fab from Milli Vanilli superimposed on a beach.

I only have one question: where was Hasselhof?

I hope this gets to you video

Because I'm a romantic at heart and this is kind of fantastic, watch this:

 From Jezebel.com:

The video was put together by a guy named Walter C. May and his roommates—who just happen to be in a band called The Daylights. It was posted on YouTube yesterday and has since then been tweeted about by May's friends, random strangers, and even Katy Perry.

But May's girlfriend, for whom the video was made, hasn't seen it yet.

That's because May wanted the video to reach her organically—through tweets, links passed between friends, and blog posts. He wanted to show his girl that they "can feel close without having to be close every day," and that their relationship can remain strong even though they'll be thousands of miles apart over the next two years.

tunes Tuesday: runaway dorothy

So, I follow Mr. Adam Duritz of Counting Crows on the Twitter and he's raved about a band called Runaway Dorothy, so I figured I should check them out.  I liked what I heard.  Runaway Dorothy is wonderfully authentic in a day and age where popular music is over-produced and commercial.

In this video you'll hear some of Runaway Dorothy's music and frontman, David Parnell, talk about song writing.

The band also has this embeddable player to share of their album, The Arc.  My favorite is "Katharine Song." Check them out.

Tunes Tuesday: Delta Spirit

Delta Spirit is fantastical.  That's all you really need to know.

But here's the intro of their Wiki:

Delta Spirit is a band from San DiegoCalifornia. They are often dubbed as a “hybrid of rock and northern soul” or as an "Americana/soul" group. The group incorporates unconventional instruments (such as trash cans lids and orchestral bass drums), the multi-instrumentalism of the members and the vocal delivery and religiously/spiritually-themed lyrics of singer Matt Vasquez. The group consists of Jon Jameson (bassist), Brandon Young (percussionist), Matthew Vasquez (vocalist/guitarist), and Kelly Winrich (multi-instrumentalist).

I found out about Delta Spirit from a music site that I stumbled on and instantly loved them.  Each song is better than the last.  I've downloaded their albums History From Below and Ode to Sunshine and I really can't say enough good things about them.   These guys are the real deal.  I think you'll like them.

"Bushwick Blues" is the first song I listened to, so I'm offering it up first.  I'm including several songs today because it was hard to pick favorites.  Good stuff.  Enjoy.

"White Table" is amazing.  The percussion blows me away.

Shut up.  "Motivation" rocks.  I like the jam session sound of it.

"People C'mon" may be my favorite.

But maybe "Trashcan" is my favorite.  I love me some rocking piano.

the pixies are still fantastic

Did you watch 120 Minutes back in the day when MTV still played music?  I miss that show.  It was a fantastic show to find new music, specifically modern rock, which is what I listened to then and still love now.  I wish there was a music channel (that played good music) and that they would give me a show introducing new bands to the people.  That is part 2 of my dream job (part 1 being my magazine writer career, but that was before all the magazines started folding).

I remember watching The Pixies on 120 Minutes and thinking how cool bassist Kim Deal was.  The Pixies were a band that came out at the same time as lots of modern rock bands, but they were different.  Today you can hear their influence in bands like Radiohead.  And you should be able to hear the new Pixies album soon from what hear on the interwebs.

Here are my two favorite Pixies songs, "Gigantic" and "Here Comes Your Man."

"Here Comes Your Man" is still pretty fantastic 20 years later.  It's one of those songs.
