food guide pyramid is dead

For those of you who didn't know, the government killed everyone's fave, the Food Guide Pyramid. It was replaced with this:

MyplateI like it — colorful, graphic, nice font. BUT WHAT DOES IT MEAN?

“Parents don’t have the time to measure out exactly three ounces of chicken or to look up how much rice or broccoli is in a serving,” First lady Michelle Obama said today at the unveiling of the MyPlate campaign. So, we're supposed to more fruits and veggies.

Are we supposed to have dairy with every meal? Is macaroni and cheese a protein, grain, or dairy? Does the dairy have to be in a glass? Can it be a White Russian? Where is the dessert plate? And what size plate should we use? Can I use a charger plate? What about a platter?

Mrs. Obama, please email me with these answers soon because I don't know what to eat for dinner.

Updated:

There. I fixed it.

30 day movie challenge — day 31: surprise day!

I knew I should have written this a week ago because now I'm in a horrible mood and I want to write about things that were missing from the 30 Day Movie Challenge. Ugh.

The first thing that was missing was Best Movie Title, which would have to be To Wong Fu, Thanks For Everything, Julie Newmar. If you remember from my post after Patrick Swayze died, I love To Wong Fu. When I grow up I want to be Vida Bohemme.

Another missing category was Best Holiday Movie. This seems like a natural category. I would pick several: The Shop Around the Corner, The Bishop's Wife, Love Actually, and both You've Got Mail and When Harry Met Sally.

What about Favorite Kevin Bacon Movie? He's in everything. Apollo 13.

Thing You'd Want to Eat From the List of Shrimp Items Bubba Says in Forrest Gump: that would be gumbo. Coconut Shrimp is a close second.

Don't forget Favorite Movie with a Crossdresser. Has to be Tootsie. Duh.

One of my favorite favorites would be Favorite Movie in Which Music is Important, But it's Not a Musical. I would have to pick High Fidelity. Love that movie. Love John Cusack. Little known fact — I will watch anything John Cusack is in even if it scares me to death (I'm talking about the freaky scary 1408).

I suppose this is the end of the challenge. I had fun, I hope you did as well. Ginger suggested doing 30 Days of Randomness after this. That's pretty much what this blog usually is, isn't it?

30 day movie challenge — day 28: movie with the best ending

This is a hard category because I want to pick movies you'd be all "Kerry, that's lame, how could you pick THAT?!" So, I'll pick two. One would be Good Will Hunting, the other is Love Actually. The airport scene at the end of Love Actually is a wonderful ending to a wonderful movie and concludes most of the story lines. The ending of Good Will Hunting leaves you hopeful and I like that.

The ending for Love Actually has embedding disabled, so I'm sorry. Even though I'm pretty sure everyone has seen it by now, here is the ending of Good Will Hunting.

30 day movie challenge — day 27: movie that describes your life

Do you know what doesn't exist? A movie about a married extremely hormonal creative 30something year-old red-haired big girl. Go ahead, check IMDB — doesn't exist.

Screen shot 2011-05-25 at 6.15.47 PMDo you know what does exist? Lots of other movies.

The movies I'll talk about today are what would describe my adolescence. My youth would be a blend of Pretty in Pink and Sixteen Candles.

My teenage years were spent trying to be myself and to figure out who that self was while being a poor creative red-haired girl trying to be noticed by whomever the guy of the time was. As most people who grew up on the poor side of middle class will tell you, I didn't know we were poor. I didn't have a car. I wore what I considered to be great clothes, but I babysat to pay for them. I didn't wear jeans. Not once in high school did I wear jeans. I thought I was fat. I thought everyone thought I was fat. I was different and I liked being different. Things were difficult for me though. I put up with a lot of crap that I should have stood up against. Bad things happened. Good things happened. I dated bad boys. I had good friends. I was clinically depressed. I loved. I lost. I didn't understand what was going on with me. I didn't understand why things were happening the way they were.

I was young. Someone should make it into a movie.

30 day movie challenge — day 26: movie you quote the most

There isn't one particular movie I quote the most, so I'll give you the 10 quotes I've used the most in, oh, the past 20 years.

Pretty in Pink:

"It's called a sense of humor – you should get one – they're nice."

"Listen, it's after 7:00. Don't waste good lip gloss." and "wishful make-upping."  – Lord knows I've done both.

"Applause, applause, APPLAUSE." — must be said slowly and for attention.

"If I was in a Turkish prison, I'd have a great time with you." — I love this quote. Love it.

Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil:

"It's like my mom always said, 'Two tears in a bucket, motherfuck it.'" — probably my favorite quote of all time. Yes, I'm awful.

The Jerk:

"I was born a poor black child." — obviously.

"Well I'm gonna to go then! And I don't need any of this. I don't need this stuff, and I don't need you. I don't need anything. Except this."

"I'm picking out a Thermos for you. Not an ordinary Thermos for you." — I sing this to myself often. I don't know why.

"Lord loves a workin' man; don't trust whitey; see a doctor and get rid of it." — when we lived in Brunswick, GA, I whispered this every Sunday in church at the end of service when the plate was passed for tithing as our pastor said "give cheerfully, the Lord loves a cheerful giver." The hubs told me to stop every Sunday. I couldn't help it.

30 day movie challenge — day 25: movie with a character you can really relate to

There are many characters I can say I used to relate to, but that's no longer the case for most of them because they were from my younger days and truth be told, Hollywood doesn't exactly make many movies that are relatable for 30something year-old superfantastic women. Most movies about 30something year-old women are dumb women finding themselves and I know who I am. And so, the older I get the more I relate to Ouiser Boudreaux from Steel Magnolias.
