6.306/365: the beatles’ “now and then”

In the 1990s, the remaining three Beatles came together to make the Anthology documentary and released a three piece box set of demos, alternate takes, and songs. It is a lot.

At that time, Yoko Ono gave Paul, George, and Ringo some demo tapes that John had recorded on the piano. There were four songs the guys decided on three of them. After working with producer, Jeff Lynne, they agreed that with the technology of the time, “Now And Then” couldn’t be used because the piano was over John’s voice in parts and a hum was in the recording.

In the 25 years since Peter Jackson’s company invented a method of isolating vocals and instruments like nothing before. Some of you know of Get Back, the documentary he produced last Christmas. Jackson took all of the footage shot for the original Let it Be doc and made it incredible. It looked clean and sounded incredible and bright. Applause all around.

The same technology was used to isolate John’s voice and piano on “Now and Then,” and it’s fantastic. You can find the original demo on YouTube for comparison. The short film about how it was made is on their YouTube channel is great. Go check it out to see just how it was done.

This is the final new Beatles song. Unlike the 1996’s “Real Love” and “Free As a Bird,” this has the stuff. Real Beatles DNA. I’m blown away.
