4.185/365: Happy Independence Day

Today is my favorite holiday. It begins my birthday month and it celebrates what the promise of our country can be. Yes, it originated when our very white, male, slave-owning forefathers declared independence from Britain, but I’ve always believed it to be more than that. And after one faction in our country has co-opted our national flag and knowing the founding fathers didn’t mean POC and women, this holiday is very muddled for a lot of Americans.

As usual, Dan Rather put it much better than I.
