Sunday rewind: Echo and the Bunnymen

Can you stand it?!  Bands from Liverpool two Sundays in a row.

Echo and the Bunnymen is still making music together with two of their original members, but had their biggest success in the 80's, appearing on the Pretty in Pink and The Lost Boys soundtracks.  I caught the Bunnymen on tv last week in a recent concert and it brought me back to 1986.  Great year for post-punk music.  Ian McCulloch's voice is the same as it was then, just lovely.

I remember playing the Bunnymen for a friend in middle school who didn't get the subtlety of "Bring on the Dancing Horses" compared to the likes of "Don't Worry, Be Happy" and the Bon Jovi catalog.  That was the "aha moment" when I realized there are people in this world who have zero taste in music.  It's not that I fancy myself a music snob, it's that I don't care for 95% of what's on the radio and that's fine with me.

Back to the Bunnymen.  I've wondered about their name, but it wasn't until today that I looked it up, here's a quote from guitarist Will Sergeant, "We had this mate who kept suggesting all these names like The Daz Men or Glisserol and the Fan Extractors. Echo and the Bunnymen was one of them. I thought it was just as stupid as the rest."  So, there's the proof that some bands pick names based on stupidity.

Here are "Bring on the Dancing Horses" and "Lips Like Sugar," two absolutely superfantastic songs for your Sunday.  Enjoy!
